Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Finally Has an Opening Date

Designed by Frank Gehry and years in the making, the museum will officially open on December 11, 2026, on Saadiyat Island.

It is official: Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open its doors on December 11, 2026. The long-awaited museum of modern and contemporary art is joining Abu Dhabi’s increasingly serious cultural line-up on Saadiyat Island, alongside Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.

At this point, Saadiyat Cultural District is becoming a full cultural itinerary.

Part of the wider Guggenheim family, which includes museums in New York, Venice and Bilbao, the Abu Dhabi institution is not being presented as a copy-and-paste version of what already exists elsewhere. Its collection and programming will look at modern and contemporary art through a perspective shaped by the UAE, the region and Abu Dhabi’s long history as a meeting point between different cultures.

The museum will focus on art from the 1960s to today, bringing together painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image and new media. Rather than telling one neat, chronological history of art, it will connect artists and ideas across countries, generations and disciplines.

Frank Gehry, But Make It Abu Dhabi

The building itself is, unsurprisingly, a major part of the story. Designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi sits between land and sea, with a silhouette shaped by the architecture and climate of the Gulf.

Inside, the museum will include 30 galleries connected through a central atrium. Ten sculptural cones rise through the building—nine wrapped in stainless-steel mesh and one finished in onyx and glass, .creating natural ventilation and shade while giving the museum its instantly recognisable form. Some of the cones reach heights of up to 88 metres.

The scale is difficult to ignore: 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space, 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition areas and a total built-up area of 80,000 square metres.

So yes, wear comfortable shoes.

A Collection Built Over Time

Although the museum has yet to open, its collection has been developing since 2009. The galleries will explore themes including abstraction, popular culture, land, language and storytelling, looking at how artistic ideas have travelled and changed across different regions. Visitors will be encouraged to create their own routes through the museum rather than follow a single fixed narrative.

That approach feels especially relevant in Abu Dhabi. The city has spent years positioning itself as more than a host for international cultural names, building institutions that bring global conversations into contact with local history and regional perspectives.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is designed to sit within that exchange; not simply importing art into the UAE, but asking how the UAE can shift the way that art is seen, understood and discussed.

Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, describes the collection as both local and global, centred in the region while featuring work from every continent. Meanwhile, Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, says the museum will create new opportunities for learning, creativity and cultural exchange.

And whileiIt would be easy to focus only on the architecture, the scale or the Guggenheim name, the more interesting question is what the museum will actually add to the region’s cultural landscape.

For younger audiences, it offers access to modern and contemporary art without requiring a trip to New York, London or Paris. For artists and creatives from the region, it creates another major platform where their work can exist within a genuinely international conversation. And for Abu Dhabi, it is another step in becoming a city where culture is not treated as decoration, but as infrastructure.
