A Celebration of Regional Storytelling: Arab Cinema Week Volume 4 Returns to Cinema Akil

One of JDEED's all-time favourite cinematic experiences is back, and this year, it's bigger, bolder, and more resonant than ever. Arab Cinema Week Volume 4, presented by Fujifilm, makes its much-anticipated return to Cinema Akil from May 2 to May 11, 2025, and it’s bringing with it a masterfully curated selection of films that speak to the soul of the Arab world.

From psychological thrillers and intimate dramas to politically charged documentaries, this year’s edition showcases 10 feature films from 10 Arab countries, with a remarkable 50% directed by women. Cinema Akil once again proves its commitment to spotlighting underrepresented narratives, especially those shaped by the voices of Arab women on both sides of the lens.
The opening film, Three by Emirati filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja, sets the tone with a gripping tale that blends tradition, trauma, and the supernatural. Standouts in this year’s lineup include Arzé by Mira Shaib, a humorous yet moving journey through Beirut’s sectarian complexity; Mond by Kurdwin Ayub, a surreal tale of power and surveillance; Aicha by Mehdi Barsaoui, an unflinching look at female autonomy; and Sudan, Remember Us by Hind Meddeb, a raw portrait of youth resistance that lingers long after the credits roll.
This edition is not just a watch but the occasion to truly immerse yourself. Post-screening Q&As, moderated by Nour Labib, will offer exclusive interviews and insights with the directors, bridging the gap between film and audience in intimate, thought-provoking conversations. The debut announcement of the Fujifilm Short Film Festival, and a stunning visual identity by Nada Sultan, rich in wild vegetation and poetic symbolism, elevate the experience into a cultural happening.
Founder Butheina Kazim describes it best: "In its 4th edition, Arab Cinema Week is now a recurring moment in Cinema Akil's annual calendar, rooted to stay." And rooted it is—planted as a grove of stories four years ago, now in full bloom.
Arab Cinema Week Volume 4 runs from May 2 to 11 at Cinema Akil, Alserkal Avenue. Tickets are AED 56.70. Full schedule available at cinemaakil.com.
Better bet JDEED will be there, front row - or you know whichever is the best row to watch these exceptional movies from.
